Leveraging AI for Genuine Connection: Balancing Efficiency with Humanity

Startups & Funding Sep 11, 2026 Charlie O'Donnell

AI can enhance personal connections and visibility in networking, instead of diminishing them, by fostering intentional engagement in less time.

Leveraging AI for Genuine Connection: Balancing Efficiency with Humanity

The intersection of technology and human connection has never been more relevant, especially as the capabilities of AI expand. Rather than diminishing our interactions, AI can serve to deepen them, allowing us to be more human in our engagement with others.

The Power of Personal Details

When you reflect on communication, it often boils down to the personal touches that resonate. A stark example comes from a cold email I received from Earnest Sweat. He referenced a past interaction back in 2016 when he attended my video hangout on venture capital, illustrating how our initial connection ten years ago laid the groundwork for what he aimed to share now—his journey to starting his own fund.

What’s compelling is how he felt confident enough to reach out. This confidence was built not only on our shared history but also on two decades of content that fostered an open invitation rather than mere instruction. When communication is one-sided, it invites little engagement. By contrast, a more inclusive approach encourages dialogues and connections.

Rethinking Visibility

In today's world, where information overload is commonplace, visibility takes on new challenges, especially with the prevalence of AI. While it might seem that more content equates to greater visibility, the reality is often the opposite. The sheer volume of repetitive or impersonal posts can dilute the human element we crave in our professional interactions.

As I continue leading cohorts in my initiative, Visible Work, I’ve recognized a shift in focus. Instead of merely amplifying our accomplishments, our aim is to make our connections more meaningful. This involves working towards authentic interactions in less time and employing AI to streamline that process without losing personal touch.

AI as a Facilitator of Connection

For instance, I used to curate a personal update email for a select group of a few hundred people. The intention was genuine, yet responses often got buried in my inbox amidst the busyness of life. Nowadays, my AI Chief of Staff tracks these replies, ensuring I respond and engage with those who take the time to connect with me. This mass email approach doesn’t diminish the interactions; instead, it enhances them by providing quicker, more personalized responses.

Furthermore, in today’s AI-centric world, thoughtful communication also involves ensuring we ask the right questions. I once drafted an update that completely neglected to inquire about my recipients' lives. Thanks to my AI manager, this oversight was corrected before hitting send, emphasizing the importance of reciprocal dialogue.

Mindful Networking

Building and maintaining relationships must incorporate an understanding of who we may overlook. For example, during my organization of a large annual tech party, I ask myself: Who deserves to be included? Who has contributed to the tech landscape in New York? Leveraging AI helps me remember individuals I might forget, ultimately creating a more inclusive environment.

Moreover, sometimes connections emerge from unexpected avenues. A mass email led to unexpected conversations and deeper reflections, such as the one I had regarding family bonding with a lovely acquaintance who responded to my update. This illustrates how a broader outreach can cultivate intimate conversations.

Looking Ahead: Advanced AI Tools

I also have personal aspirations for a tool that could serve as a reminder for significant life events of my connections. For instance, after losing my father in December 2024, I recognized the depth of conversation surrounding grief and connection. It would be invaluable if I had assistance recognizing others in my network facing similar experiences, allowing for timely outreach and support.

In a similar vein, utilizing tools like voice chat with AI allows for flexibility in communication, shedding the constraints of traditional writing methods. This practice offers a modern take on connecting, especially in our time-strapped lives.

Technological Support or a Human Replacement?

Despite AI's advantages, many argue that it might reduce personal engagement. My perspective flips this notion—using AI isn’t about shifting the responsibility of connection from humans but rather enhancing our ability to connect intentionally.

For example, many social media platforms, like Facebook and Instagram, profile our networks but often fail to offer meaningful actions based on this data. Wouldn’t it be more beneficial if platforms identified shared experiences among network members—like losing a parent—and suggested groups for support? Engaging in these initiatives could create a lasting impact, promoting support rather than anger, as is often witnessed on these platforms.

Decentralizing Thought Leadership

As I iterate on my teaching and sharing methods, the key now is a shift from simply publishing content to publishing content that invites engagement. Instead of tracking metrics like posting frequency, I now emphasize the importance of tracking who deserves to share a coffee and creating meaningful connections.

Over my two years of running cohorts, I've come to understand that sometimes, the most impactful “visible work” isn't about what you write but the conversations you have. Building these relationships nurtures the professional engagements that can lead to larger opportunities down the line.

Join the Movement

If you resonate with the idea of forging deeper connections while employing tools to maximize those interactions, consider joining my cohorts at Visible Work. The focus is on creating a connection network rather than just adding to noise.

Finally, I’m keen to hear your experiences. How have you leveraged AI to keep your relationships more human and meaningful? For instance, a young VC recently shared that her father used ChatGPT to improve conversations with his family, reflecting an inspiring human element we could all learn from.

We often underestimate the potential of technology in fostering genuine connections. By embracing AI thoughtfully, we can enhance our humanity and make our interactions truly count.
