Happy Pops, the Australian dessert brand, is taking the franchise leap with its inaugural store in Toowoomba, aiming for careful growth and brand recognition.

Happy Pops, a beloved Australian dessert brand known for its handcrafted gelato, sorbet, and yogurt pops, is embarking on an exciting new chapter as it steps into the world of franchising. With the opening of its first-ever franchise in Toowoomba, the company is poised to expand its reach beyond its strong Queensland roots.

From Local Favorite to National Presence
Founded in 2018 by Augusta and Ian Puttkammer, Happy Pops opened its first store in Noosa, catering to locals and tourists with a penchant for high-quality frozen treats. Fast forward to today, and the brand has grown its presence to three company-owned locations in Noosa Heads, South Brisbane, and Mooloolaba.
The franchise decision reflects Happy Pops' successful trajectory over the last eight years, having gained a loyal customer base and sold nearly two million pops since its inception. Augusta notes, “We’ve created something unique in a busy market. We really are still a very hands-on small family business.”
The Franchise Journey
In 2023, the Puttkammers made the pivotal decision to open the Happy Pops business model to potential franchise partners. By early 2024, after almost 18 months of meticulous planning, refining production processes, and deliberating on the ideal franchise model, they were ready to grant their first franchise. Augusta characterizes this moment as “absolutely surreal,” underscoring the commitment to maintaining the brand's family-centric ethos.

This journey wasn't without its challenges. Although inquiries about franchising surfaced early on, the founders felt the need to first understand what a suitable model would be for them. “As the business grew, we grew as business owners,” Augusta explains. Engaging with experienced friends in the franchising sector helped them carve out a unique path rather than follow any conventional franchising template.

A Thoughtful Growth Strategy
Unlike many businesses that rush to scale, Happy Pops is taking a measured approach. “Our strategy is absolutely not something like 60 stores in 12 months. While we have a loose goal in our minds, the mission stays the same as it’s been since day one: slow and controlled, and only if it feels 100% right,” Augusta emphasizes.

The Puttkammers are looking into master franchise options for other states and even considering international opportunities over time. They are also planning to introduce a mobile Happy Pops concept for franchisees, broadening their service capabilities and exposure.

Fostering Community Roots
As they expand, maintaining strong ties to the local community remains a priority. The Puttkammers are enthusiastic about having local families represent the Happy Pops brand in their respective areas. “Having a local family representing our brand and being part of the Happy Pops family is so important and special. Franchises are often linked to large corporations, but for us, franchising is about putting the spark in a business that you just can’t get with a manager,” Augusta states.
Happy Pops currently employs around 40 individuals, with their teams ranging from young first-time workers to experienced chefs. This varied workforce not only contributes to the vibrant culture of the brand but instills a sense of community within their stores.
Future Plans and Ambitions
Looking ahead, Augusta mentions plans to grant additional franchises in Queensland, specifically targeting three more locations and possibly a master franchise in the upcoming year. Their Toowoomba store, while currently undisclosed, is strategically planned to open during the Carnival of Flowers in September 2026, a season that attracts many visitors to the area.
As they pursue these ambitions, the couple remains open and adaptable to the shifts and opportunities that may arise. “The beautiful thing with plans is that they change,” says Augusta, emphasizing the importance of flexibility in business strategies.
Conclusion: A Sweet Future
Happy Pops is not just ensuring scalability but is deeply invested in maintaining quality, customer satisfaction, and the family-oriented nature that has defined them since day one. As they embark on this franchising journey, they aim to create a nationally recognized dessert brand, setting a precedent for quality and community engagement in the food service industry.
For founders and business owners, Happy Pops offers practical lessons in thoughtful expansion and community connection, reinforcing that success often lies in measured growth and a genuine love for the brand.
