DStv Cuts Kenya Prices by Up to 38% as It Seeks Subscriber Growth

DStv’s new Kenyan prices lower the cost of live sport and satellite access, while putting pressure on revenue per subscriber.

DStv Cuts Kenya Prices by Up to 38% as It Seeks Subscriber Growth

DStv is making live sport cheaper in Kenya as it tries to attract viewers back to a service facing competition from other pay-TV providers and online video. The price changes, effective November 5, cut the cost of the top package by 38% and give every Premier League and UEFA Champions League match a place in a KES 3,000 monthly tier.

For MultiChoice, owned by France’s Canal+, the business question is whether lower prices and a simpler line-up can bring in enough new or returning subscribers to offset the smaller amount collected from customers who move down a tier. The company hasn’t disclosed its Kenyan subscriber targets, package-level margins or its expected financial impact from the changes.

Four packages replace six

Starting November 5, DStv will offer four packages, priced from KES 750 ($6) to KES 7,300 ($56) a month. The new Ultimate package replaces Premium at KES 7,300, down from KES 11,700 ($90). Sports will cost KES 3,000 ($23), compared with KES 4,200 ($33) for Compact. Select is KES 1,500, down from Family’s KES 2,250, while Starter is KES 750, down from Access at KES 1,450 ($11).

The biggest monthly saving in cash terms is for Premium subscribers who move to Ultimate: KES 4,400. At the stated monthly prices, that amounts to KES 52,800 ($407) over a year. The new Sports tier includes all Premier League and UEFA Champions League matches, as well as UFC and WWE. That puts major live events in a cheaper package than before, potentially giving viewers a reason to reconsider a downgrade or cancellation.

The reshuffle removes Compact Plus and Lite. MultiChoice hasn’t explained how customers on those packages will be assigned to the new line-up. Until it does, those subscribers can’t tell from the announced prices alone whether their bills or channel choices will change.

For new customers, a decoder, satellite dish and installation will cost KES 2,000 ($15), according to the company. DStv is also adding the packages to its streaming service, creating an option for customers who prefer not to arrange a satellite installation. Existing satellite subscribers can connect a smartcard number to a DStv Stream account, the company said in a post on X on Monday. Customers can register up to four devices, with one able to stream at a time.

Nzola Miranda, MultiChoice Kenya’s chief executive, described the changes as the first full review of the company’s product line-up in its 30 years in Kenya. He said the revised offer is intended to provide more value and choice for customers.

Lower prices raise the subscriber hurdle

The cuts arrive as Canal+ seeks to reverse pressure on MultiChoice’s subscriber base and finances. MultiChoice ended 2025 with 14.4 million subscribers across Africa, down from 14.9 million, according to reported figures. Canal+ has committed about €100 million ($112 million) to a turnaround plan, closed the Showmax streaming service and said MultiChoice would post a loss of about €140 million ($157 million) in 2026, according to reported coverage and another report.

TechCabal’s estimates illustrate the scale of the trade-off if customers pay the listed monthly price. After a 38% reduction in Ultimate’s price, MultiChoice would need about 61% more subscribers at that rate to collect the same subscription revenue. Compact’s 28.6% cut would require about 40% more subscribers to make up the difference.

Those are simplified comparisons. They don’t account for customers switching between packages, promotions or changes in viewing habits, and they don’t show whether the company will earn more or less overall. For example, a customer moving from Premium to Ultimate would save money but would still remain a subscriber. The result for MultiChoice would depend on the mix of package changes and any additional customers the prices attract.

Sports makes the value proposition more direct, but it also puts the economics under pressure. MultiChoice will collect less from each customer who moves to a cheaper tier while continuing to carry costs for premium sports rights. The company’s challenge is to pair the lower price with enough subscriber growth to support that offer.

Competition extends beyond satellite TV

Kenya’s latest pay-TV figures give MultiChoice a starting point for that effort. June data from the Communications Authority of Kenya show 259,047 MultiChoice satellite television subscriptions, including 189,871 for DStv. MultiChoice’s satellite services grew 37% year over year and 4.4% from March, suggesting that its position had improved before the new prices took effect.

The same June count recorded about 1.55 million broadcasting subscriptions across the market. Digital terrestrial providers GOtv and StarTimes together accounted for 874,777. Satellite and cable providers served the balance, with StarTimes and Wananchi, which operates Zuku, among DStv’s established competitors.

Viewers also have more ways to watch through internet connections. June figures from the Communications Authority recorded 54.9 million mobile broadband subscriptions and 52.3 million smartphones. Average mobile data use per subscription reached 17 GB, up from 13.5 GB a year earlier, while fixed internet subscriptions grew 32% over the year to 2.84 million.

That expansion gives more households the means to stream video, though data costs and reliable broadband access remain practical limits for some. DStv Stream gives MultiChoice a way to reach customers who don’t want a dish, while placing the service in a crowded online viewing market.

The test now is whether lower entry prices and a more accessible sports tier can turn interest into sustained subscriptions. The June figures offer a useful baseline; the next measure will be whether customer growth after November can keep pace with the revenue given up on each lower-priced package.
